President Ruto Grants Charters to Tangaza University and Management University of Africa
President Dr. William Ruto granted charters to two universities on Thursday, Tangaza University and Management University of Africa, in a colorful event at Statehouse Nairobi, raising the country’s total number of accredited universities to 64.
President Ruto declared during the ceremony that Kenya now possesses 64 chartered universities, reinforcing its position as a regional center for higher education.
He urged education stakeholders to persist in meeting the increasing demand for higher education, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing access to quality education for those at the lower echelons of the social and economic hierarchy.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu expressed gratitude, noting that this follows the recent charter granted to Kenya’s first online university, the Open University.
Machogu stated that the award of the two charters demonstrated the President’s commitment to the promotion of tertiary and university education in the country.
The CS applauded President Ruto’s recent implementation of a new higher education funding model, stating that Kenyan students’ ambitions were becoming a reality because to his commitment and dedication to the educational goal.

Mr. Machogu stated that by fulfilling the stringent requirements, those two institutions had demonstrated their preparedness to nurture scholars, innovate in research, and contribute significantly to the nation’s intellectual and human capital.
He stated that the institutions have a strong governance structure, financial restraint, and comprehensive academic programs.
The charter award is not only a recognition of academic distinction, but also a testament to the unwavering commitment to creating possibilities for knowledge, research, and innovation that will benefit the education sector and society as a whole.

During the ceremony, Prof Edward Etengu was installed as Chancellor of Tangaza University, and Dr Reuben Musyoka Mutiso as Chancellor of the Management University of Africa.
