According to official government figures, 238 people died as a result of the countrywide floods, which began in March.

According to a State House insider, May 10, 2024, will be a day to remember those who have suffered harm as a result of climate change.

The announcement, attributed to the President, urged everyone to utilize the day to strive for the enhancement of our environment.

The head of state went on to say that the day would be spent planting trees to help combat climate change.

According to government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, 75 people are still missing as a result of the flooding.

Mwaura said in a press statement on Tuesday that 174 people are suffering from critical injuries, and 47,000 homes have been displaced.

The Nyanza region (40,000) and the Eastern region (5,957) have the next-highest numbers of affected people, respectively, after Nairobi (164,000).

Mwaura stated that the government has deployed varied mechanisms to handle the disaster and manage the ongoing evacuations.

He stated that the government has deployed the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) and National Youth Service (NYS) to aid in search and rescue operations, and mobilized the National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO) to assist residents in relocating to safer areas.

Additionally, he mentioned that there are approximately 30 designated evacuation centers, including churches and schools, on raised grounds.

Mwaura emphasized the importance of proactive action, urging residents not to wait until the water arrives, as it may become unmanageable. He stressed that disaster management is a collective responsibility.

To avoid flooding casualties, the Head of State urged all people living in vulnerable habitats to relocate to safer places.

He also vowed to pay the approximately 40,000 households displaced by the floods Ksh10,000 each for temporary shelter and to begin work on 20,000 inexpensive dwellings.

The Head of State also declared that schools would return on Monday, March 13, two weeks later than previously scheduled. The administration intended the extension to provide time for analyzing the impact of flooding on schools and families.
