Teachers Demand Resignation of KUPPET Leaders for Supporting Rejected Finance Bill

Omboko Milemba, KUPPET National Chairman and Emuhaya MP, faces intense pressure to resign after voting YES to the controversial Finance Bill 2024. This bill, widely rejected, has put Milemba and another KUPPET official in a difficult position.

Two senior KUPPET officials, both Members of Parliament, are under fire. KUPPET National Chairman Omboko Milemba and KUPPET National Secretary (Gender) Catherine Wambilianga, who is also the Bungoma County MP, voted in favor of the Finance Bill 2024.

This decision has estranged them from teachers and constituents alike, who are now demanding their resignation.

Their support for the Finance Bill 2024 has sparked anger among teachers nationwide. Many feel betrayed by their actions, viewing it as a significant letdown. The reaction has been strong and unified in condemning the two officials for what is seen as a betrayal.

Milemba and Wambilianga are key members of KUPPET’s National Executive Board, the union’s top decision-making body. Their controversial vote has prompted widespread disapproval, including from branch officials across various counties.

Regional Reactions

KUPPET Vihiga Executive Secretary Sabala Inyeni reported that teachers are extremely disappointed with the situation.

He mentioned that the feeling of betrayal and abandonment by the national office is unprecedented.

Similarly, Migori Executive Secretary Orwa Jasolo emphasized that the two officials should resign as they no longer represent the common teacher’s interests but rather their personal agendas.

The Finance Bill 2024 provoked significant resentment across the country, leading to widespread protests, especially from the younger generation, Gen Z.

The protests were so intense that they prompted the president to return the bill to the National Assembly with orders to delete all controversial clauses.

Furthermore, the president recently dissolved his entire Cabinet, including the Attorney General, in response to the unrest.
