Teachers Seek Mass Transfers as 2027 Election Tensions Rise.
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has raised concerns over the increasing incidents of political violence in the country, warning that escalating political tensions ahead of the 2027 General Election could negatively affect learning operations in several regions.
The union revealed that hundreds of teachers have already sought urgent transfers from areas they consider insecure due to emerging political tensions and security threats.
Speaking during a press briefing held on June 17, 2026, KUPPET National Chairperson Omboko Milema stated that teachers are increasingly concerned about their personal safety and security amid reports of heightened political activity in parts of the country.
“We are sending a stern warning to politicians and all the leaders who are spreading divisive politics and telling those who are not from a particular region to leave. We are not going to accept that as teachers,” Milema stated.
KUPPET warned that divisive political rhetoric could undermine national cohesion and create an environment of fear among public servants working outside their regions of origin.
The union further called upon law enforcement agencies to take action against political leaders accused of promoting ethnic division and political intolerance as the country approaches the next electoral cycle.
Concerns were also raised regarding the reported use of hired youth groups to disrupt political activities and public gatherings. KUPPET urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to intervene and address the emerging trend.
KUPPET Deputy Secretary General Moses Nthurima called for immediate action by security and oversight agencies.
“We urge the police, the DCI and the NCIC to hold politicians to account for their speech before it’s too late,” Nthurima said.
“Security agencies must also address the emerging issue of goonism, which is formalising political violence in Kenya,” he added.
According to the union, reports from various regions indicate that growing insecurity concerns have prompted a significant number of teachers to seek transfers from areas perceived to be vulnerable to politically motivated violence.
The warning comes amid increased reports of hired youth being deployed to disrupt politically linked meetings, rallies and public events. Several incidents have resulted in confrontations, destruction of property and loss of life.
One of the recent incidents involved suspected hired youth who reportedly stormed a church in Nairobi during an ongoing meeting. The incident resulted in the disruption of the gathering, theft of property from attendees and damage to church property.
The incident intensified concerns regarding public safety and the potential impact of political violence as preparations for the 2027 General Election continue.

The National Police Service and the Ministry of Interior and National Administration have maintained that political violence will not be tolerated. The agencies have warned that firm legal action will be taken against individuals found participating in, facilitating or sponsoring acts of political violence.
KUPPET reiterated its call for all relevant institutions, including the National Police Service, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission, to take proactive measures to prevent further escalation of politically motivated violence and to safeguard the security of teachers and other public servants across the country.
