The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has criticized the TSC and Ministry of Education for neglecting the concerns raised by the teachers and unions.

KNUT’s first national vice chairman, Mr. Malel Langat says that intern teachers take home only Sh13,000 after deductions despite having workloads similar to those of permanent staff.

The Employment and Labor Relations Court ruled on April 17, 2024, that the terms for contract teachers should remain effective until August 1, 2024.

Justice Bryam Ongaya declared that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) violated intern teachers’ rights to fair labor practices.

Ongaya said that TSC should employ teachers under non-discriminatory terms, confirming that those on contracts are permanent and pensionable.

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) affirmed its readiness to collaborate with the National Treasury, TSC, National Assembly, and Ministry of Education to find a resolution.

“Kuppet is ready to work with the National Treasury, the TSC, the National Assembly and the Ministry of Education to find a solution to the issue,” Mr Misori.

Take action

Meanwhile, Kuppet officials such as Mr. Ronald Tonui and Mr. Henry Obwocha, as well as branch secretaries Mary Rotich, Charles Ngeno, and Paul Kimetto, urged the government to take action and end the strike.

Mr. Ngeno announced a shift in strategy from county-level to sub-county-level protests in Narok on Sunday, following demonstrations held at county headquarters across the 47 counties in the previous week.

In a statement last Tuesday, TSC Chairman Jamleck Muturi urged the interns to comply with the court order and return to school.

President William Ruto disclosed that his administration has employed 56,000 teachers, with plans to hire an additional 20,000 this year to address the teacher-student ratio in schools.
