Thousands of Teachers Await Promotion: KUPPET’s Demands to TSC

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has formally requested the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to promote over a thousand educators who have remained in the same job groups for more than a decade.

This appeal highlights the need for career progression among teachers who have long been overlooked.

KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori emphasized the importance of automatic promotions for these teachers in the future.

He expressed dissatisfaction with the current promotion system, noting that despite adhering to the career progression guidelines (CPG), many teachers have not been advanced.

Misori highlighted that several teachers had attended two or three interviews without success.

The list of teachers awaiting promotion includes those formerly in job group M (now C5) and job group L (now C3).

This situation was a key topic during a five-day retreat in Naivasha, where KUPPET officials, TSC representatives, and a technical team discussed the issue.

The retreat, prompted by numerous inquiries from KUPPET regarding the previous year’s promotion list, revealed significant concerns.

Misori pointed out discrepancies, such as the inclusion of fourteen deceased teachers on the promotion list and the advancement of numerous curriculum support officers and TSC secretariat staff, who are technically not teachers.

KUPPET provided a list of a thousand teachers who have been stagnant in their positions for over ten years, urging TSC for their immediate promotion.

The union also called for the elimination of the CPG and the establishment of a more equitable teacher progression system. The list of these educators is available on the TSC website.

Misori’s comments reflect the union’s broader dissatisfaction with the promotion process, which many feel has unfairly excluded deserving teachers.

The union’s demands aim to address these issues and ensure that all educators have the opportunity for career advancement.
