TSC Grades, Salaries and Allowances for Classroom Teachers and Administrators.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) categorizes its employees into various grades, each corresponding to different titles and responsibilities. The grading system plays a vital role in determining the duties, salary scales, and benefits associated with each position.

The grading structure begins with Grade B5, where primary school teachers are classified as Primary Teacher II, and continues to Grade D5, which is the highest, held by Chief Principals.

The various titles within the system include teachers, headteachers, senior masters, and principals, all of whom hold different responsibilities based on their grade.

Grades and Titles Overview

In Grade B5, teachers are categorized as Primary Teacher II with a TSC scale of 5. Grade C1 includes roles like Primary Teacher I, Secondary Teacher III, and Lecturer III, with a TSC scale of 6. Grade C2 encompasses Senior Teacher II, SNE Teacher II in both Primary and Secondary education, and Lecturer II with a TSC scale of 7.

Progressing to Grade C3, the title expands to Senior Teacher I, SNE Teacher I (Primary), SNE Teacher II (Secondary), and Lecturer I, with the scale rising to 8. At Grade C4, positions like Deputy Headteacher II, Secondary Teacher I, and Senior Lecturer IV are included with a TSC scale of 9.

Further up, Grade C5 holds titles such as Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher I, Senior Master III, Senior Lecturer III, and Curriculum Support Officer II, with the scale at 10.

Grade D1 is for Senior Headteachers, Senior Masters II, Deputy Principals III, and Senior Lecturers II, with the TSC scale at 11.

Moving into Grade D2, titles such as Deputy Principal II and Senior Master I fall under a scale of 12. Grade D3 is represented by the role of Principal and Deputy Principal I, with a scale of 13.

Grade D4 holds Senior Principal with a scale of 14, while Grade D5 is reserved for the Chief Principal, the highest-ranking title in the system with a TSC scale of 15.

Basic Salary Structure

Each grade is associated with a defined salary range that determines the minimum and maximum pay a teacher or educational officer can earn.

As teachers move up the ranks, their salaries increase proportionally. In Grade B5, the minimum salary is 21,756 Ksh, and the maximum is 27,195 Ksh. For Grade C1, salaries start at 27,195 Ksh and can reach 33,994 Ksh.

As teachers progress to Grade C2, they earn between 34,955 Ksh and 43,694 Ksh. In Grade C3, the salary range goes from 43,154 Ksh to 53,943 Ksh, and for Grade C4, it is between 52,308 Ksh and 65,385 Ksh.

Each grade is associated with a basic salary range. The pay increases progressively with higher grades.

Salaries for Grade C5 range from 62,272 Ksh to 77,840 Ksh, while Grade D1 sees salaries from 77,840 Ksh to 93,408 Ksh.

For Grade D2, the salary increases to a range of 91,041 Ksh to 109,249 Ksh, and Grade D3 has a salary range of 104,644 Ksh to 125,573 Ksh. Grade D4 offers a salary between 118,242 Ksh and 141,891 Ksh, with Grade D5 offering the highest salary range, from 131,380 Ksh to 157,656 Ksh.

Allowances

Beyond the basic salary, teachers receive various allowances that contribute to their total compensation package. These allowances are meant to cover different work-related expenses and are paid based on the grade and location.

Commuter Allowance is given to help with transportation costs, with Grade B5 receiving 4,000 Ksh and this amount increasing for higher grades. For Grade C5, the commuter allowance reaches 8,000 Ksh, while Grade D3 and above get higher amounts, such as 14,000 Ksh for Grade D3.

The Disability Guide Allowance provides an additional 20,000 Ksh to all grades for teachers with disabilities, ensuring they are supported regardless of their rank within the service.

Leave Allowance

Leave Allowance is an annual payment made each January. For teachers in Grade B5 and C1, the allowance is 4,000 Ksh, whereas higher grades such as Grade D1 to D5 receive 10,000 Ksh annually.

House Allowance

In addition to these, teachers are provided with House Allowance, which varies depending on the teacher’s grade and their location. Teachers in Nairobi receive the highest house allowance, with Grade C1 teachers earning 10,000 Ksh, and Grade D5 teachers getting 50,000 Ksh. The allowance is lower in other municipalities, with Grade B5 receiving 4,500 Ksh in major municipalities like Mombasa and Kisumu, and 3,200 Ksh in other areas.

Hardship Allowance

For those posted in areas facing challenges, the Hardship Allowance offers additional support. Teachers in Grade B5 receive 6,600 Ksh, which increases progressively with higher grades, reaching 38,100 Ksh for Grade D5.
