TSC Intern Teachers Demands Full Compensation Following Court Ruling
The approximately 60,000 teachers hired as interns by the Teacher Service Commission (TSC) may now demand their employers pay them their full compensation for the duration of their service.
Intern teachers on the TSC payroll said on Wednesday that they will go to court to get the employer to pay them arrears for the time they have worked.
In a news conference in Nairobi, the intern teachers, led by spokesperson Boniface Omari, chastised the commission for neglecting to pay them for the 15 months they had worked.
Omari stated that they are taking legal action to pursue compensation for the period they served the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) without payment.
He mentioned that the Commission owes them Sh26 billion, which they are demanding be provided to them promptly.
Additionally, he expressed the desire for the government to compel the commission to fully adhere to the court ruling stating that teachers with comparable qualifications should receive equitable compensation.

“We want the government to pursue the commission to fully comply with the court decision that teachers bearing similar qualifications should receive equal pay,” he added.
Court hearings revealed that interns were teaching a full curriculum, including sciences and mathematics, despite only having a contract to teach two subjects, which complicated their status as “interns.”

Furthermore, despite earning only an intern stipend, full taxes and government contributions, including the contentious housing levy, were withheld from their income.
