TSC Revised Requirements for Secondary School Teachers 2024 as per CBC
Teaching is one of the most prominent professions in Kenya, with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) overseeing over 300,000 teachers in both primary and secondary schools.
The TSC, established as an independent commission under the Constitution of Kenya, ensures the management of human resources within the education sector.
New Secondary Teachers Qualifications
The TSC has clearly outlined the qualifications required for different levels of teaching:
- Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE)
- Primary Education Teaching
- Diploma and Degree in Education
Each of these groups has distinct responsibilities and required qualifications. As the most senior in this list, secondary school teachers must meet specific qualifications.
Since teaching is a dynamic profession, the curriculum and qualifications change regularly. The TSC has updated the qualifications required to teach in secondary schools for 2024.

TSC Minimum Qualifications for Various Education Diplomas and Degrees
These requirements include specialized programs for teaching both visually and hearing-impaired learners.
Requirements for Diploma in Education
- A minimum grade of C+ in KCSE
- At least C+ in two subjects of specialization or training
- Minimum of C plain in English
- At least a C plain in Mathematics for science-based courses
- At least a D+ in Mathematics for non-science-based units
TSC Minimum Requirements for Diploma in Education (Visually and Hearing Impaired)
- Minimum grade of C plain in KCSE
- At least C- in English
- At least C- in Mathematics for science-based units
- Minimum of D plain in Mathematics for non-science-based units
TSC Minimum Bachelor of Education Requirements
The TSC has set the following minimum requirements for secondary school teachers:
- Minimum mean grade of C+ or its equivalent
- C+ in two subjects of training

For individuals training in a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science, the minimum requirements are:
- A minimum grade of C+ in KCSE
- Minimum of C+ in two subjects of specialization
- At least a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) for those willing to move into teaching roles
These qualifications ensure that teachers are well-equipped to handle the dynamic nature of the teaching profession and meet the needs of their students effectively.
