TSC Says 3,445 New Schools Established in the Last 5 Years
Dr. Nancy Macharia, the Teachers Service Commission CEO, says that over the five-year period, 3,445 new schools had been established, with 160 new institutions added this year alone.
These schools require skilled leadership, and the TSC is keen on promoting qualified teachers to principal positions.
She urged school principals to motivate eligible teachers to apply for upcoming vacancies, highlighting the importance of proactive participation in the promotion process.
TSC acknowledged a significant shortage of teachers in junior secondary schools. According to Chief Executive Nancy Macharia noted that these schools require 99,045 teachers, yet there are only 56,928 currently employed. This leaves a gap of 42,117 teachers.
The commission plans to hire 20,000 new teachers to help close this staffing gap. However, the recruitment will not happen until TSC receives funding from government.
Intern teachers, who were hired last year to manage Grade 8, have expressed dissatisfaction with their working conditions.
