Ranking Metrics
The rankings were based on multiple metrics, including financial stability and the quality of the learning experience provided by each institution.
Data gathered included factors such as the institution’s financial capacity to deliver effective teaching and the faculty-to-student ratio, which reflects the availability of teaching staff for interactive learning.

Institutions were also evaluated on their ability to build skills and equip students with tools for success in the workforce. The rankings further assessed intangible benefits of education, such as ethical leadership and societal impact.
The metrics were organized into five pillars: resources and finance, access and fairness, student engagement, ethical leadership (a new category), and Africa impact.
The methodology was developed by Times Higher Education’s data team in collaboration with university leaders across Sub-Saharan Africa and a consortium of African and international higher education organizations.

At the continental level, the University of Johannesburg emerged as the top-ranked university with a score exceeding 80 points, followed by the University of Pretoria and the University of the Witwatersrand, all based in South Africa.
