KNEC Issues Urgent July 30 Deadline for All Grade 10 Learners.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has directed all school principals to register their Grade 10 learners on the School-Based Assessment (SBA) portal before July 30.

In a notice shared with Kenyans.co.ke on June 24, KNEC officially closed registration of Senior School assessment centres, paving the way for the next critical phase of the process.

This implies that school principals whose centres are already registered have been enabled to access the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal and begin uploading their learners’ details.

“Following the closure of registration of Senior School assessment centres, KNEC wishes to bring the following to the attention of Principals: Registered centres have been enabled to register Grade 10 learners on the portal for School-Based Assessment (SBA),” stated KNEC. The portal is accessible through the web address https://cba.knec.ac.ke, which principals are required to use when logging in to complete the registration.

To log in, principals must use the new universal centre code generated from the Senior School portal during the initial centre registration, which serves as both the username and password.

This means schools that missed the centre registration window may now face challenges accessing the system, putting thousands of learners at risk of missing out.

Thus, the registration deadline of July 30 leaves principals with a narrow window to ensure every Grade 10 learner in their institution is captured on the system.

The registration enables KNEC to manage continuous assessment data, including projects, practicals, and written tests, which will contribute directly to learners’ final summative scores under the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework introduced in schools.

The portal also allows authorities to verify student biodata, enrolment figures, and pathway choices, while tracking learners using unique Assessment Numbers assigned at Grade 3 to maintain unbroken digital records through Senior School.

Of essence is that Principals are to utilise the portal to enrol students into their selected senior subjects, including the STEM sciences, Social Sciences, or Arts & Sports Science, and to manage the administration of the Term 2 Grade 10 School-Based Assessment (SBA) projects and practicals.

This move is expected to affect close to 1.13 million grade 10 students, according to the Ministry of Education data that form the pioneer cohort under the CBE system, representing candidates who sat the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA).
