KNEC Launches Digital Platform for KCSE and KCPE Certificate Download and Verification.

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has launched an electronic certificate platform that enables former candidates of national examinations to access and download digital copies of their academic certificates online.

The platform is available to candidates whose Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) records are contained in the KNEC database for examinations conducted between 1989 and 2025.

Under the new system, eligible applicants can create an account, complete identity verification, pay the prescribed certificate generation fee and download a verifiable digital certificate without visiting KNEC offices or their former schools.

According to KNEC, applicants are required to register on the e-Certificate portal using a valid email address before completing their personal profile.

Kenyan applicants are required to provide their National Identity Card details, which are verified automatically through the Integrated Population Registration System (IPRS). Upon successful verification, applicants must enter their examination index number, select the examination type—either KCSE or KCPE—and indicate the year in which they sat the examination.

Candidates whose examination details are successfully verified are then required to pay a certificate generation fee of KSh1,200, exclusive of Value Added Tax (VAT) and applicable eCitizen transaction charges, through the available electronic payment channels.

Following confirmation of payment, the digital certificate is generated and made available for download in Portable Document Format (PDF).

KNEC noted that every digital certificate issued through the platform contains a blockchain verification hash to facilitate authentication by institutions and authorised users. The council added that downloaded certificates will remain accessible through the platform for a period of six months.

In addition to certificate issuance, the platform enables certificate holders to transmit official verification reports directly to employers, universities, government agencies and other organisations requiring confirmation of academic credentials.

KNEC has also established a separate certificate verification portal for organisations involved in academic and employment verification processes. The portal is accessible to universities, employers, government institutions, professional bodies and other authorised organisations seeking to verify certificates presented by applicants.

According to the council, organisations processing a high volume of verification requests can utilise the bulk verification function, which supports the submission of up to 1,000 certificates in a single request through the upload of a Comma-Separated Values (CSV) file together with the corresponding certificate documents.

The introduction of the electronic certificate platform is expected to facilitate digital access to KCSE and KCPE certificates, particularly for former candidates whose original certificates have been lost or require official verification for employment, admission or other administrative purposes.
