TSC Announces Salary Increase for Teachers as Government Releases Ksh8.4 Billion.
Teachers across the country will begin earning higher salaries from July 1 after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) confirmed that the Government has allocated Ksh8.4 billion to facilitate the salary enhancement.
The announcement was made by Teachers Service Commission Chairperson Jamleck Muturi on Friday, June 26, during the closing ceremony of the 49th Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) Annual National Conference of Principals held in Mombasa.
Muturi confirmed that the salary increment will take effect from July following the allocation by the Government.
“We have been allocated Ksh8.4 billion for increasing teachers’ salaries from July this year. That money has been allocated, and we will ensure that it is paid,” Muturi stated.
The announcements follow the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Teachers Service Commission and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) on June 18 to revise the Career Progression Guideline governing teacher promotions.
The Memorandum of Understanding is anchored on the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) signed between the Teachers Service Commission and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers in July last year.
Under the revised Career Progression Guideline, teachers seeking promotion will progress through six promotion levels, replacing the previous structure that required movement through a greater number of stages before appointment to senior positions.
The Teachers Service Commission stated that the revised framework is intended to streamline the promotion process and facilitate faster consideration of eligible teachers for advancement within the teaching service.

Why This Matters
Teachers are the backbone of Kenya’s education system. Better remuneration is expected to:
- Reduce teacher attrition and brain drain.
- Improve morale and classroom performance.
- Attract more qualified professionals to the sector.
- Support national goals like Vision 2030 and sustainable development in education.
Unions like KNUT and KUPPET have hailed the deal as a step toward equity, particularly for classroom teachers who felt overlooked in previous agreements.
