Missed KUCCPS Deadline? CS Ogamba Orders KUCCPS to Reopen Applications.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has directed the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service to reopen placement applications for eligible students who missed the just-concluded 2026/2027 placement cycle, stating that no qualified candidate should be left behind in accessing higher education.

The directive was issued on Wednesday, July 8, during the official release of the 2026/2027 university and college placement results. The Cabinet Secretary instructed KUCCPS to immediately develop a mechanism that will enable candidates who failed to submit their course applications during the initial application window to apply for placement.

Ogamba said the government had acknowledged that some eligible candidates did not participate in the placement exercise for various reasons, including pursuing alternative education and training pathways or missing the application opportunity due to other circumstances.

“We recognise that some eligible students did not apply for placement because they may have opted to seek alternative pathways to higher education and training. Still, some of them may have missed the opportunity to apply because of other circumstances,” Ogamba said.

He added:

“I have directed the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service to immediately devise a mechanism to allow late applications for placement. Our clarion call is that no student should be left behind.”

The Cabinet Secretary urged all eligible candidates who failed to submit applications during the initial placement period to take advantage of the reopening once KUCCPS announces the application schedule.

2026/2027 Placement Results

The directive followed the release of placement results showing that 293,869 students secured placements in universities, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, teacher training colleges and other tertiary institutions for the 2026/2027 academic year.

According to the placement statistics, 980,535 candidates sat the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination.

Out of the total candidature:

• 268,729 candidates attained a mean grade of C+ and above, qualifying them for degree programmes.
• 202,133 students secured university degree placements through KUCCPS.
• 8,915 degree-qualified candidates opted for TVET institutions and other non-degree programmes.
• Approximately 57,681 candidates who qualified for university admission did not secure placement through the current exercise after failing to submit applications.

Government Directs KUCCPS to Identify Non-Applicants

Ogamba said the government believes a significant number of eligible students may have deliberately pursued alternative pathways outside the KUCCPS placement process.

These include:

• Joining the disciplined forces.
• Pursuing higher education abroad.
• Enrolling as self-sponsored students in universities and colleges.
• Taking up other education and career opportunities outside the government placement system.

To establish the exact number of eligible candidates who missed placement, the Cabinet Secretary directed KUCCPS to identify all students who did not submit applications during the placement cycle and publish the figures. He further instructed the placement agency to establish a mechanism that will facilitate late applications for those candidates.

Inter-University Transfer Period Extended

During the announcement, the Cabinet Secretary also directed that the inter-university transfer window be extended from the current two weeks to one month.

According to Ogamba, the extended transfer period will provide students with additional time to review their placement outcomes and transfer to institutions or programmes that better align with their academic interests and career aspirations.

Universities and Colleges Directed to Prepare for Admission

The Cabinet Secretary further directed all universities and colleges that received successful applicants to immediately commence admission preparations.

He instructed institutions to issue joining instructions to successful candidates without delay in order to facilitate a smooth transition into universities, colleges and other higher learning institutions ahead of the 2026/2027 academic year.
