How to Check Your TSC Employment Status Online.

If you’ve applied for a teaching post, registered for a TSC number, or gone up for a promotion, the fastest way to find out where things stand is the TSC online portal — not a phone call to Upper Hill. All you need is your ID or passport number, or your TSC number, depending on which status you’re checking.

One thing worth clearing up first: “TSC employment status” isn’t one single thing. The portal actually tracks three separate processes, and mixing them up is the most common reason teachers say they “can’t find” their status.

The Three Different “Statuses” TSC Tracks

What you’re checkingWhat it tells youWhere to check it
Registration statusWhether your application for a TSC number (certificate of registration) has been processedTSC Online registration portal
Recruitment/application statusWhether your application for an advertised teaching vacancy has been shortlisted, interviewed or selectedTSC recruitment/HRMIS portal, during an active exercise
Employment/payroll statusWhether you are an active, confirmed employee on the TSC payroll (as opposed to an intern or unconfirmed applicant)T-Pay and your appointment letter, or your Head of Institution via TMIS

Most people searching for “TSC employment status” are really asking about the first two. Here’s how to check each one.

How to Check Your TSC Registration Status

This confirms whether your application for a certificate of registration — the one that gives you a TSC number — has been processed.

  1. Go to the TSC Online registration portal.
  2. Select Registration Status from the menu.
  3. Enter your National ID number or passport number.
  4. Click Search.

The portal will return one of several status messages, explained below.

How to Check Your TSC Job Application Status

If you applied for an advertised teaching vacancy (open recruitment, internship, or promotion), your progress is tracked separately, and only while that specific exercise is active.

  1. Visit the TSC recruitment portal linked from the current vacancy advert (this changes with each exercise, so use the link from the official advert rather than an old bookmark).
  2. Log in using the ID number or portal credentials you used to apply.
  3. Check your dashboard for shortlisting, interview, or selection notifications.

TSC also sends SMS notifications to shortlisted candidates, so keep the phone number on your application current. TSC does not accept manual or walk-in applications, and it never charges a fee to apply, shortlist, or select a candidate for any position — a point worth repeating given how common recruitment scams have become (more on that below).

What Each Status Message Means

Status shownWhat it means
VerifiedYour application or documents have been reviewed and confirmed by the Commission
In progressReceived but not yet processed
RegisteredRegistration successful — your TSC number is now shown on the portal, and you’ll get an SMS confirmation
ResetAn error was found; the specific issue is stated on the portal and sent to you by SMS so you can correct and resubmit
IncompleteYour application or supporting documents are missing something
RejectedYou did not meet the requirements for registration (see common reasons below)

Setting Up Your TSC Portal Account

Before you can check anything, you need a TSC Online account, created when you first apply for registration. You’ll be asked to fill in your personal and academic details and upload scanned copies of:

  • Certified academic and professional certificates
  • Bank slip/details
  • One recent passport-size photo
  • KRA PIN certificate
  • Certificate of Good Conduct (DCI)
  • National identity card
  • Duly filled GP69 medical form
  • For non-citizens: a valid entry and work permit, plus a vetting letter from the Ministry of Education

Registration Fees (Confirm on the Official Portal Before Paying)

Application typeFee (non-refundable)
New registration (Kenyan citizens)KSh 1,050
New registration (non-citizens)KSh 1,055
Duplicate certificateKSh 2,055

Payment is made through the integrated eCitizen payment options on the portal (M-Pesa, Airtel Money, bank cash options). TSC does not collect registration fees through any other channel, and you should never pay an individual claiming to process your registration faster for a fee.

Why TSC Might Decline a Registration Application

An application can be rejected or flagged if the applicant:

  • Lacks the minimum academic and professional qualifications required
  • Has a documented history of mental illness that would affect their capacity to teach
  • Has a criminal record with the relevant investigative authorities
  • Has a conviction for a sexual offence or an offence against a learner
  • Has engaged in conduct that undermines the Constitution of Kenya

If your status shows “Reset” rather than “Rejected,” it usually means a fixable documentation error, not a disqualification — read the specific reason given on the portal or in the SMS before assuming the worst.

Is TSC Recruiting or Promoting Teachers Right Now?

This changes often enough that it’s worth checking the TSC website directly before you apply anywhere, but as of September 2026, the picture is this:

  • New permanent and pensionable hiring is on hold. TSC has told Parliament it will not recruit new permanent teachers until it finishes confirming the roughly 20,000 Junior School intern teachers currently serving, whose two-year internship period runs out around January 2027.
  • A large promotion exercise is underway. TSC advertised 34,016 promotion vacancies across primary schools, secondary schools and Teachers Training Colleges in July 2026. More than 160,000 teachers applied by the August 10, 2026 deadline, over 70,000 were shortlisted (roughly three candidates per vacancy), and interviews have been running from late August through mid-September 2026, coordinated by Regional, County and Sub-County Directors.
  • JSS intern confirmations are progressing on a published timeline, with the current cohort expected to move to permanent and pensionable terms once they complete their internship period in January 2027.

Because these timelines shift with budget approvals, always cross-check the current position on the official TSC website or the advert you applied under, rather than relying on the general status of “is TSC hiring” from an older article.

Common Questions About Checking TSC Status

How long does TSC registration take?

TSC says it processes registration applications and issues the certificate within 30 days of a complete submission. In practice, some applicants get their TSC number within a few weeks; others wait closer to the full month, especially during high-volume periods.

Can I get a TSC number without a Certificate of Good Conduct?

No. A valid Certificate of Good Conduct from the DCI is a mandatory supporting document for registration, alongside your academic certificates, GP69 form, and the other items listed above.

What are the minimum qualifications for a secondary school teacher in Kenya?

For a Bachelor of Education (Arts), TSC generally requires a mean grade of C+ at KCSE (or equivalent) with at least C+ in each of your two teaching subjects. Diploma and certificate-level entry routes have their own separate requirements, so check the current advert for the specific cadre you’re applying to.

How do I reset my TSC portal password?

On the TSC portal login page, click “Forgot your password,” enter the email or phone number registered on your profile, and follow the reset link sent to you. If your registered phone number or email is no longer active, self-service reset will fail, and you’ll need to visit your Sub-County TSC office in person with your original ID to update your contact details.

My status has stayed “In progress” for a long time — what should I do?

If it hasn’t changed after a reasonable processing period (well beyond the standard 30 days), don’t submit a duplicate application, as this can create confusion in the system. Instead, contact TSC’s official enquiries channels or visit your Sub-County Director of Education’s office.

A Word on Scams

Recruitment and transfer fraud remains a real problem in the sector. Reported scams typically involve someone posing as a TSC official or agent, contacting applicants or serving teachers, and asking for money to “guarantee” a job, speed up a transfer, or unlock a stuck application.

TSC does not charge for job applications, shortlisting, interviews, or ordinary status checks, and legitimate portal communication comes only through the official .tsc.go.ke domain and SMS from the Commission’s own systems.

If someone asks you to pay for any of this outside the official eCitizen payment step on the portal, treat it as fraud and report it to your Sub-County TSC office.

If you use a cyber café or a shared computer to access the portal, avoid saving your password, and log out fully before leaving the machine — personal details entered on shared devices have reportedly been misused to take out loans or access services without the account holder’s knowledge.

Bottom Line

Checking your TSC status takes minutes once you know which of the three processes you’re actually tracking: registration, job application, or confirmed employment. Use the official TSC portal for each, keep your registered phone number current, and treat any request for payment outside the standard eCitizen fee as a red flag.
