Female Teachers Wants TSC to Establish Gender Desk
Female teachers in Trans Nzoia County are advocating for the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) to establish a gender desk to address mental health issues among their colleagues.
During a meeting at Kitale School, primary school teachers highlighted the increasing cases of poor mental health among female teachers, warning that these issues could escalate to life-threatening situations.
Patricia Melisa, a teacher, reported that staff members are experiencing depression due to financial constraints and domestic issues.
She emphasized the necessity of professional psycho-social support to manage these challenges, which would also enhance their performance in schools.

Melisa, who teaches at Lessos Primary School, stated that teachers are overwhelmed by various challenges from their homes and workplaces and have no place to seek help.
She called for the establishment of a TSC gender desk in the county to address these issues.
Jane Wachwenge, the Trans Nzoia Chief Officer for Gender, urged female teachers to speak out when overwhelmed instead of suffering in silence due to fear of ridicule.

She noted that some teachers remain in abusive marriages without seeking solutions, leading to potentially life-threatening situations.
Wachwenge also advised teachers to engage in income-generating activities during their free time to supplement their income and avoid finance-related depression.
