Government Targets Over 21,000 JSSs in National Smart Board Rollout.
More than 10,000 Junior Secondary Schools (JSSs) across Kenya are set to receive interactive smart boards under the first phase of the Government’s digital learning programme aimed at strengthening the implementation of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum.
Basic Education Principal Secretary John Ololtuaa announced that 10,382 Junior Secondary Schools will benefit during the initial phase of the programme. The remaining schools will be covered under the second phase, bringing the total target to more than 21,000 Junior Secondary Schools nationwide.
The announcement was made during a courtesy visit to Hill School Senior School in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, on Monday.
According to the Ministry of Education, the digital infrastructure programme forms part of the Government’s broader efforts to modernize teaching and learning in public schools through the integration of digital technologies into classroom instruction.
Speaking during the visit, John Ololtuaa stated that the phased rollout had been designed to ensure that all Junior Secondary Schools are eventually equipped with interactive smart boards.
“We’re also looking at all junior secondary schools. Some 10,382 of them across the country will receive smart boards in Phase One. In Phase Two, the remaining schools will also benefit,” Ololtuaa said.
The Principal Secretary noted that the Government remains committed to ensuring the effective implementation of the Competency-Based Education curriculum through continued investment in digital learning infrastructure and other education resources.
“The Government of Kenya, through the Ministry of Education, is very keen to ensure that the Competency-Based Education is implemented accordingly, and the processes to implement it are going on in the best way possible,” he said.
Ololtuaa further revealed that the Ministry had received numerous development requests from schools across the country. He stated that the requests would be evaluated based on priority needs and the availability of resources.
“I have already received a list of the projects you have requested. We will sit together with the school leadership and agree on the priority areas because we are serving the whole country,” he added.
During the visit, the Principal Secretary also addressed learners, urging them to remain committed to their academic goals and to maintain discipline throughout their education.
He encouraged students to pursue ambitious career aspirations, believe in their abilities, and avoid behaviours that could negatively affect their education. He identified laziness, drug abuse, peer pressure, and other social vices as factors that could undermine students’ academic and personal development.

The rollout of interactive smart boards is expected to support classroom instruction in Junior Secondary Schools as the Ministry of Education continues implementing the Competency-Based Education curriculum across the country.
