JSS Teachers Strike Continues Until Demands Are Met — KUPPET
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has declared that the ongoing strike by Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers will continue until their demands receive attention.
The union has accused the government of ignoring the teachers for the three weeks the strike has been on, resulting in suffering for the learners.
To address their concerns, the 46,000 intern teachers are demanding an adequate budgetary allocation in the next financial year.
Simon Kimani, the Nakuru branch union chairman, noted that the intern teachers would not return to work until their demands were addressed.
He highlighted that the government had been paying them a meager Sh17,000 per month, which cannot meet their daily needs.

Despite threats and intimidation from school heads, he emphasized that the interns will not report to work, leaving thousands of learners to suffer.
Kimani pointed out that the government claimed there was no money to meet the demands of teachers, yet President William Ruto had hired a luxurious private jet for Sh200 million.
Nakuru Kuppet Secretary General Dancun Macharia mentioned that the court had ruled the internship to be illegal and that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) ought to issue letters of confirmation before the interns resume their teaching services.
Macharia urged the parliamentary budget committee to ensure adequate allocation to cater to the demands of all the intern teachers.
George Owino, representing JSS teachers in Naivasha, stated that they will keep off classes until the government fulfills their demands.
Owino emphasized that the Sh17,000 they receive is insufficient to cover their daily expenses, particularly given the recent surge in living costs.

He emphasized that the TSC must confirm intern teachers by issuing employment letters on permanent and pensionable terms to all 46,000 teachers.
Isaac Mungai, an intern teacher, expressed regret that, despite TSC promising to confirm them after one year of service, it has extended the internship period to two years.
He reaffirmed their refusal to return to classrooms until their demands are satisfied.
