KNUT Warns TSC Against Distributing Employment Letters at Funerals
KNUT has cautioned the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) against distributing employment letters at funerals, likening it to treating teachers as commodities rather than professionals.
Patrick Chungani, KNUT Secretary for Western region criticized TSC for exacerbating challenges in the education sector, including low teacher morale and diminished educational quality due to inadequate staffing.
Chungani emphasized the critical link between sufficient teaching staff and the delivery of quality education and good academic performance.
“We cannot have quality education and good performance without good staffing and enough teachers,” he observed.
He expressed concern over the selective hiring practices of TSC, which he argued unfairly restrict employment opportunities for deserving teachers, including those who graduated between 2008 and 2010.
Additionally, Johnston Wabuti, KUPPET Chairman for Kakamega County, highlighted a significant disparity in teacher promotions within the county.
Out of 4,300 eligible teachers, only 800 were promoted, leaving 3,500 teachers awaiting promotion.
This shortfall has resulted in many institutions operating without deputy heads due to pending promotions.
During the Education Day event at St Agnes Shibuye Girls in Shinyalu Constituency on May 31, concerns over educational resources and achievements were raised.
Electine Kisiang’ani, Principal of St Agnes Shibuye Girls, lamented the imbalance between student enrollment and teacher availability, noting a shortage of 36 teachers despite a student body exceeding 1,300.
The event also celebrated academic excellence, with institutions like St Peter’s Seminary, Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls High, and Mukumu Girls Primary School receiving accolades.
