TSC Latest Qualifications for Secondary School Teaching

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has established that individuals with a diploma or degree in education are eligible to register as secondary school teachers.

These qualifications are the minimum standards for entering the teaching profession.

TSC Qualifications for Diploma Teachers

TSC has set forth specific minimum requirements for teachers holding a diploma in education:

Diploma in Education:

A diploma in education from a recognized Teacher Training Institution is required.

Minimum Academic Performance:

Applicants must have a minimum mean grade of C+ in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or an equivalent qualification.

Subject Proficiency:

A minimum grade of C+ in two chosen teaching subjects is required. However, diploma teachers who graduated in 2008 or earlier, with a mean grade of C (plain) in their teaching subjects, are eligible to teach in secondary schools.

This provision also applies to hearing-impaired and blind individuals trained with a mean grade of C in the relevant subjects during the specified period.

TSC Minimum Qualifications for Graduate Teachers

TSC has outlined the following requirements for secondary school teachers with a degree:

Academic Qualifications:

Candidates must have a mean grade of C+ in KCSE and at least a C+ in each of the two teaching subjects. Alternatively, candidates with two principal passes and one subsidiary pass at ‘A’ level are also eligible.

Category of Educational Degrees:

  • Eligible degree courses under the teaching profession include:
    • Bachelor of Education with two teaching subjectsBachelor of Science with EducationBachelor of Arts with Education
Proficiency in two teaching subjects is emphasized for all the above degrees.

Additionally, candidates must have completed their teaching course from a recognized institution and be registered as a teacher with a valid TSC number.
