TSC to Recruit 20,000 JSS Teachers, 2,000 for ASAL Areas
The government will hire an additional 20,000 teachers in the coming fiscal year to alleviate the existing shortage, primarily in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS).
In a joint meeting of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET).
This came at the conclusion of a six-day meeting between teachers’ representatives and the commission at Sawela Lodge in Naivasha.
Senior TSC officials were conspicuously absent from a media conference hosted by the KUPPET National Executive Committee.
Addressing the press, KUPPET National Chairman Milemba Omboko stated that Sh4 billion will be required to recruit 20,000 teachers to handle the JSS situation throughout the country.
Kuppet Secretary General Akelo Misori stated that 2,000 of the 20,000 teachers working in JSS would be assigned to Asal areas.
According to Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Director of Quality Assurance Dr Reuben Nthamburi, teacher shortage in Kenya stands at 116,000.
Secondary school teachers on internships earn Sh20,000 per month, while those assigned to primary schools earn Sh15,000. Last month, TSC declared that these teachers’ tenure would become permanent and pensionable in 2025.
