KUPPET Threatens Countywide Strike Over Alleged Intimidation of TSC Principal.

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Nyamira County branch, has accused a section of Catholic clergy and the Board of Management (BOM) of St. Peter’s Nyakemincha Senior School of allegedly intimidating and interfering with the duties of the school’s newly deployed principal.

The union raised the concerns in a letter addressed to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, calling for investigations into what it described as persistent, irregular, unlawful and unprocedural actions against the principal.

KUPPET Nyamira Executive Secretary Ayieko Mogaka stated that the principal had allegedly been subjected to harassment, intimidation and interference since assuming office at the school on August 21, 2026.

According to the union, the alleged actions were intended to force the principal out of the institution and facilitate the installation of another individual preferred by the parties involved.

“On behalf of the teachers of Nyamira county and the KUPPET Nyamira leadership I wish to draw the attention of the Teachers Service Commission through the CEO, and other government agencies on the persistent, irregular, unlawful and unprocedural acts of harassment, intimidation and interference with the discharge of duty by the duly deployed principal of ST. Peters Nyakemincha by a small section of the Catholic Clergy within Kisii Diocese and BOM chairperson,” KUPPET stated.

The union further raised concerns over alleged continued efforts by some members of the Catholic education committee and the Board of Management to frustrate the principal.

“Of even grave concern are reports that a section of the Catholic education committee members and BOM have not only vowed to continue frustrating and intimidating the current principal,” the union stated in the letter.

KUPPET has called upon the Teachers Service Commission, the Ministry of Education and other relevant government agencies to investigate the allegations and take appropriate action against individuals found responsible.

KUPPET threatens countywide labour action

The union warned that teachers affiliated with its Nyamira County branch could withdraw their labour if the alleged intimidation and interference continued without intervention.

KUPPET stated that continued interference with the principal’s discharge of official responsibilities could result in teachers withdrawing their services and participating in peaceful processions across Nyamira County.

“If the Catholic Church or BOM continue to intimidate, harass or prevent the principal from discharging his lawful responsibilities… then all the teachers who are members of KUPPET, Nyamira branch shall withdraw labour and proceed for peaceful processions across the county,” the union stated.

The threatened action would involve KUPPET members across Nyamira County and could include demonstrations if the issues raised by the union are not addressed.

Union raises concerns over principal transfers

KUPPET also called for investigations into what it described as public perceptions concerning recommendations made by Catholic education committees regarding the transfer of principals serving in Catholic-sponsored schools.

The union alleged that such recommendations may, in some cases, be influenced by nepotism, clannism, favouritism and personal associations.

KUPPET’s concerns were directed to the Teachers Service Commission and other government agencies for investigation and consideration.

The union’s intervention follows its earlier concerns in Samburu County, where it issued a similar warning after the killing of a teacher in the area.

The latest dispute involving St. Peter’s Nyakemincha Senior School comes during the final term of the 2026 academic year, with KUPPET warning that failure to resolve the matter could result in countywide labour action by its members.
