PSSF Member Self-Service Portal: How Teachers Register and Update Pension Details.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) is again reminding teachers enrolled in the Public Service Superannuation Fund (PSSF) to register on the Member Self-Service Portal and update their beneficiary details. The reminder comes as TSC and PSSF mark the countdown to World Teachers’ Day on October 5, and it follows months of low uptake since the registration exercise began in July 2026.

If you’re a TSC-employed teacher and haven’t yet completed this process, here’s exactly what’s required, why it matters, and how to do it.

Why TSC Wants Every Teacher Registered

Kenya’s public service pension system has moved from a paper-based, manual process to the Public Service Superannuation Scheme (PSSS) — a fully digital, contributory pension arrangement. The PSSF Member Self-Service Portal is the platform through which members access and manage their individual pension accounts under this scheme.

Teachers make up the largest single group of PSSF members. According to TSC’s Circular No. 11/2026, dated 9 July 2026 and issued by then Acting CEO Eveleen Mitei, roughly 334,442 teachers are enrolled in the fund. At the time the circular was issued, only about 20,000 had created accounts on the portal.

TSC has warned that teachers who never register will be unable to monitor their retirement savings, verify that employer and employee contributions match their payslips, or track their contribution history. More seriously, unregistered or incomplete records can delay the processing of pension benefits when a teacher eventually leaves the service — whether through retirement, resignation, or medical exit.

What Registration Actually Requires

Registering is only the first step. TSC and PSSF have made clear that simply opening an account is not enough — teachers must also complete two mandatory forms.

PSSF1 – Member Enrolment FormConfirms and updates your personal and employment details in the PSSF system

PSSF2 – Beneficiary Nomination FormNames your nominated beneficiaries and how your pension benefit should be shared among them

Beneficiary details you’ll need to provide

The beneficiary form (PSSF2) is often the part teachers get stuck on, because the required information differs by beneficiary type:

  • Adult beneficiaries — national ID number and telephone contact
  • Minor (child) beneficiaries — birth certificate number
  • Percentage allocation — you must state what percentage of your pension benefit each nominated beneficiary should receive; these percentages must add up correctly across all beneficiaries
  • Guardian details for minors — where a beneficiary is a minor, you must name a guardian who will serve as the point of contact for any expenses paid out by the PSSF Trust Fund on the minor’s behalf

Because this form has real consequences for who receives your pension benefits and how, it’s worth completing it carefully rather than rushing it — errors here are harder to unwind than a simple contact-detail update.

Timeline: How the Registration Drive Has Unfolded

This has been a moving deadline, and it’s easy to lose track of where things stand. Here’s the sequence of official TSC communications so far.

DateDevelopment
9 July 2026TSC issues Circular No. 11/2026, making portal registration mandatory for all PSSF-enrolled teachers, with an initial deadline of 12 July 2026
Mid-July 2026Only around 20,000 of an estimated 334,442 teachers have registered by the original deadline
27–28 July 2026TSC issues an internal memo (Ref. TSC/DHRM&D/CS/2/VOL.XI) extending the deadline to 31 August 2026, after finding that although about 107,000 of roughly 324,000 teachers had registered, fewer than 10,000 had completed both PSSF1 and PSSF2
24 & 26 August 2026TSC runs virtual sensitisation sessions — one for teachers, one for Sub-County HR officers — to boost completion ahead of the deadline
Late August 2026Figures reported to TSC County Directors show roughly 217,000 of 324,000 teachers still unregistered as the 31 August deadline approaches
September 2026TSC and PSSF issue a renewed reminder, tied to the World Teachers’ Day countdown, urging teachers to register and update beneficiary records

A note on the numbers: TSC’s July circular cited approximately 334,442 teacher-members, while its later internal memos reference approximately 324,000 — a small discrepancy likely reflecting routine data reconciliation rather than a substantive change. Either way, the completion rate has lagged well behind the target throughout the exercise.

As of this writing, TSC has not publicly announced a further extension beyond 31 August 2026, but it also has not confirmed final completion figures for that deadline — teachers who missed it should not assume the window has permanently closed, and should register as soon as possible while watching for further guidance from TSC.

Step-by-Step: How to Register on the PSSF Portal

  1. Go to mss.pssf.go.ke (or download the PSSF Pension App from Google Play).
  2. Click “Sign Up” below the login fields to open the registration window.
  3. Enter your National ID number and your Personal/Payroll Number (TSC Number), then click “Verify” so the system can match you against existing PSSF records.
  4. Set up your login credentials once your details are verified.
  5. Log in using the same credentials and complete the PSSF1 Member Enrolment Form, confirming your personal and employment information.
  6. Upload your ID document — both sides of your national ID scanned onto a single PDF page.
  7. Complete the PSSF2 Beneficiary Nomination Form, entering each beneficiary’s details (ID/phone for adults, birth certificate number for minors), the percentage share for each, and guardian contact information for any minor beneficiaries.
  8. Submit and retain confirmation of your completed registration for your own records.

If you run into technical issues, TSC has directed teachers to seek help through PSSF’s customer service channels or their school’s Human Resource Officer rather than abandoning the process.

A Word of Caution: Check Your Data Once You’re In

Since the registration drive began, some teachers have reported discrepancies in the records the portal displays — including incorrect dates of birth and multiple members appearing to share identical scheme joining dates. This points to possible data synchronisation issues between TSC’s payroll records and the PSSF system.

Don’t assume the portal’s pre-filled information is correct. When you log in, check your personal details, employment dates, and contribution history against your own payslips and records. If you spot an error, report it through the portal or your HR office rather than leaving it uncorrected — an inaccurate record can cause the same benefit-processing delays that TSC is trying to prevent through this whole exercise.

What the Portal Lets You Do Once Registered

Beyond the one-time enrolment requirement, an active PSSF Member Self-Service account gives you ongoing access to:

  • Your pension statements and full contribution history
  • Real-time monitoring of your retirement savings
  • The ability to submit pension-related requests online instead of through paper forms
  • Notifications from the fund directly through the platform

For teachers approaching retirement, this visibility matters in a very practical way: it lets you confirm your contribution record is complete well before you need to make a benefits claim, rather than discovering a gap at the point of exit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PSSF registration mandatory for all teachers?
Yes. TSC Circular No. 11/2026 makes registration mandatory for all teachers enrolled in the Public Service Superannuation Fund.

What if I already registered before the deadline extension?
TSC has stated that teachers who completed registration under the earlier guidelines do not need to take any further action, though it’s still worth logging in periodically to confirm your PSSF1 and PSSF2 forms are both marked complete.

What happens if I still haven’t registered?
TSC has warned that non-registration prevents you from monitoring your retirement savings and can delay processing of your pension benefits when you eventually leave service. Register as soon as possible even if you’ve missed a stated deadline.

Can I change my beneficiary allocation later?
The portal is designed to let members update their records, including beneficiary information, so allocations are not necessarily permanent — but always confirm the current process through the portal or your HR office, since procedures can be refined as the system matures.

Where do I get help if the portal won’t verify my details?
Contact PSSF’s customer service lines or your school’s Human Resource Officer, who can escalate verification issues on your behalf.
