Half-Term Dates Revised in Ministry of Education’s Latest Directive
The Ministry of Education has delayed the half-term break by a week due to the postponed reopening of schools caused by heavy rains across the country.
Originally, pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools were scheduled to break for half-term from June 20 to 23, 2024.
The new dates for the half-term break are now from June 26 to 28, 2024.
Basic Education Principal Secretary (PS) Belio Kipsang communicated through a circular to all county directors of education that all boarding school learners are expected to report back on June 30, 2024.
“Learners in boarding schools are expected to report back on June 30 2024. The change may require adjustments on planned activities and schedules,” reads a circular to county directors of education.

Despite the shift in half-term dates, the PS did not suggest any extension to the school term, which is set to conclude on August 2, 2024.
Prior to the reopening of schools, Dr. Kipsang mentioned that, following consultations between the Ministry of Education and school heads, the second term of the school calendar would not be extended.
However, he did not entirely dismiss the possibility of a term extension, stating that the ministry would continuously monitor the progress of learning as the term progresses.

Dr. Kipsang also noted that the lost time could be recovered.
An extension of the term could potentially impact the timetable for national exams.
