KNEC Introduces Grade 9 Exam for Select Schools in June: Key Details
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) stated on Wednesday, April 24, that select schools will conduct Grade 9 exams in June 2024.
The exams served as a part of the preparation for the Grade 9 summative assessments, as explained during the Inaugural Annual Symposium on Competency-Based Assessment at the College of Insurance in Nairobi’s South C.
According to KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere, the council was preparing instruments for a trial in sampling schools in June.
“By October, we will issue sample papers to inform every learner at Junior School of how they will be assessed in Grade 9,” he said.
Njengere informed education stakeholders about a meeting to discuss common interests and plans for implementing CBC.
The CEO acknowledged that a 2012 task committee’s recommendation that KNEC change its name had an impact on the assessment for students in Grade 9.

This necessitated establishing an assessment council to shift away from one-time, terminal tests and toward fostering every learner’s potential through continuous assessments.
As a result, pupils will be unable to sit for the Kenya Certificate of Primary and Secondary Examinations.
KNEC did not specify which schools would pilot the initial Grade 9 national assessment test.
Following the national exams, Grade 9 students will transfer to senior school for Grade 10, 11, and 12 studies.

In senior school, pupils will be able to choose their professional route from categories such as Arts & Sports Sciences, Social Sciences, or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
Students will be able to enroll in colleges and universities of their choice once they have completed Grade 12.
