KNEC Issues Urgent July 30 Deadline for All Schools.
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has directed all schools to verify the status of School-Based Assessment (SBA) scores for candidates expected to sit the 2026 Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) and Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA).
According to a notice issued by the council, all heads of institutions are required to log into their respective Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portals and confirm that SBA scores for all eligible candidates have been successfully uploaded and captured. KNEC has set July 30, 2026, as the deadline for the verification exercise.
KNEC stated that the verification process is intended to ensure that all continuous assessment scores are accurately captured before candidates undertake the national assessments later this year.
“All heads of institutions are therefore expected to log into their school CBA portals to confirm the status of uploading of SBA scores for their 2026 KPSEA and KJSEA candidates. This should be done by July 30, 2026,” KNEC stated.
Assessment Framework Under the Competency-Based Education Curriculum
The verification exercise is being undertaken within the Competency-Based Education (CBE) assessment framework, where learners’ final assessment outcomes are computed using both School-Based Assessments and national summative assessments.
The Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) is administered to Grade 6 learners upon completion of the primary education cycle. Under the current assessment framework:
- School-Based Assessment scores accumulated during Grades 4, 5 and 6 contribute 60 per cent of the learner’s final score.
- The Grade 6 national summative assessment contributes 40 per cent of the final score.
For the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), which is administered to Grade 9 learners at the end of the junior school cycle:
- Performance in KPSEA contributes 20 per cent of the final score.
- School-Based Assessment scores obtained during Grades 7 and 8 contribute 20 per cent.
- The Grade 9 national summative assessment contributes the remaining 60 per cent.
The council noted that accurate capture of SBA scores is essential since they form part of the learners’ official assessment records and final computation of results.
Earlier Submission Exercise
The current verification exercise follows an earlier directive requiring schools to upload School-Based Assessment scores for Grade 4 and Grade 5 learners through the Competency-Based Assessment portal.
KNEC had previously extended the submission deadline to June 18, 2026, and cautioned that institutions failing to submit the required assessment data within the stipulated timelines would be subjected to the prescribed penalties.
The ongoing verification exercise is intended to identify and correct any omissions or errors before candidates’ assessment records are finalized.
Registration of Grade 10 Learners
KNEC further announced that the July 30, 2026 deadline will also apply to the registration of Grade 10 learners on the Competency-Based Assessment portal.
The council indicated that the registration exercise follows the successful completion of the registration of senior school assessment centres, which concluded on May 22, 2026.
KNEC cautioned that schools which did not register as recognized senior school assessment centres during the prescribed registration period will not be permitted to register Grade 10 learners on the Competency-Based Assessment system.
The registration of Grade 10 learners marks a key stage in the implementation of the Competency-Based Education curriculum following the transition of the first cohort of learners to senior school in January 2026.
Contribution to the Kenya Certificate of Basic Education
KNEC reiterated that School-Based Assessments remain a mandatory component of learner evaluation under the Competency-Based Education framework and contribute directly to the final Kenya Certificate of Basic Education (KCBE) results awarded at the completion of Grade 12.

Under the senior school assessment framework:
- Formative assessments conducted during Grade 10 contribute 15 per cent of the final subject score.
- Formative assessments conducted during Grade 11 contribute 15 per cent.
- The Grade 12 national summative assessment contributes the remaining 70 per cent of the final subject score.
The council emphasized that schools are required to complete the verification of School-Based Assessment records and Grade 10 learner registration within the prescribed timelines to facilitate accurate management of learner assessment records under the Competency-Based Education assessment system.
