KNEC Releases Payment of 2025 KCSE, KJSEA Examiner Allowances.
The Government has released the outstanding marking allowances for teachers and other professionals who participated in the marking of the 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) examinations following the disbursement of funds by the National Treasury.
In a statement issued on Thursday, July 9, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced that the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) had completed the disbursement of the outstanding balances of marking allowances to the respective bank accounts of examiners.
The payments follow the release of KSh1.5 billion by the National Treasury on July 7 to facilitate the settlement of outstanding arrears owed to contracted professionals who participated in the administration and marking of the 2025 national examinations.
Julius Ogamba stated that all examiners who participated in the marking of the 2025 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations had received the balance of their marking allowances through the Kenya National Examinations Council.
“We are pleased to inform all examiners who participated in the marking of the 2025 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination that the balance of their marking allowances has been disbursed to their respective accounts by the Kenya National Examinations Council,” Ogamba stated.
The release of the payments concludes a period of approximately seven months during which thousands of teachers awaited settlement of the outstanding balances despite previous assurances by government officials that the funds would be released.
Earlier, National Treasury and Economic Planning Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi confirmed that KSh1.5 billion had been released to the Ministry of Education to facilitate payment of the outstanding examiner allowances. Mbadi indicated that the allocation fulfilled a commitment previously made to members of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) regarding the settlement of the arrears.
The National Treasury noted that the allocation was specifically intended to clear the outstanding balances owed to teachers and other contracted professionals involved in the 2025 national examinations.
The delayed payment of examiner allowances had prompted concerns among teachers, with the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) previously directing its members to boycott the invigilation and marking of the 2026 national examinations until the outstanding arrears were settled.
The matter also attracted interventions from senior government officials, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who had assured teachers that the payments would be processed once the required funds were made available by the National Treasury.
The settlement of the outstanding allowances comes as preparations for the 2026 national examinations continue.
The Kenya National Examinations Council has already commenced the recruitment of assessors for the 2026 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education oral and practical examinations. Qualified secondary school teachers and college tutors have been invited to submit applications before the July 15 deadline.

The Kenya National Examinations Council has previously advised contracted professionals who have not received their payments to verify that their banking and personal details on the Contracted Professionals (CP2) portal are accurate in order to prevent delays arising from incorrect payment information.
The release of the KSh1.5 billion allocation by the National Treasury and the subsequent disbursement of examiner allowances by the Kenya National Examinations Council concludes the payment process for outstanding 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education and Kenya Junior School Education Assessment marking arrears, as preparations for the 2026 national examination cycle continue.
