Students aged 14 to 16 may use it only under direct teacher supervision, while those 17 and older are encouraged to use it responsibly on their own.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre framed the decision around fundamentals, saying the most important thing in school is that children learn to read, write, and do mathematics. The government’s official statement went further, warning that uncritical AI use in schools increases the risk of students skipping important stages of learning, and that younger children lack the critical reflection and self-regulation needed to use it well.
The AI restriction builds on a policy Norway introduced two years earlier.
