TSC Revised Eligibility Criteria for CBC Teacher Registration
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has introduced revised registration criteria for teachers implementing the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), in line with the 2024 Amendment Bill.
Effective immediately, all prospective applicants must meet the new eligibility requirements to be considered for registration.
These requirements affect various categories of teachers, including those teaching a single subject, graduates of foreign educational institutions, educators with Montessori training from the Early Childhood Development Education (EDCE), and individuals trained in special needs education.
For instance, teachers holding a Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE) must now possess a minimum grade of C plain in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and hold a DECTE certificate.
Similarly, those with disabilities interested in this field need at least a C- grade.
Prospective students of the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) program must meet specific criteria: a KCSE grade of C, a D in mathematics, and a C- in English. Candidates with impairments require a minimum KCSE grade of C-.
Similarly, candidates with a Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education (DSTE) must present their certificate, have a KCSE grade of C, and achieve at least two C+ grades in their teaching disciplines.
Proficiency in English, as well as equivalent grades in mathematics and Kiswahili/Kenya Sign Language, are also necessary.
For those pursuing a diploma in Technical Teacher Education (DTTE), prerequisites include completing two relevant STEM technical teaching subjects with grades of C+ in KCSE.
Additionally, candidates must hold a diploma in general technical courses applicable to junior and senior high school levels.
Students who have pursued Bachelor of Education or Bachelor of Arts with Education under CBC must achieve a KCSE grade of C+ and have two teaching subjects, with a C in English and a D+ in Mathematics. Applicants entering bachelor’s programs in science or arts need a KCSE grade of C+ or higher.

Lastly, applicants with a diploma in adult and continuing education must provide their certificate, with a minimum KCSE grade of C plain, and a C- for those with exceptional needs.
These updates are designed to ensure that educators meet the evolving standards set by the TSC under the CBC framework, aiming to enhance the quality of education across Kenya.
