TSC Secures Funding for 24,000 Permanent JSS Teacher Jobs.
The Teachers Service Commission has announced that funding has been secured for the employment of 24,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers on permanent and pensionable terms.
The recruitment is intended to strengthen staffing levels in Junior Secondary Schools and follows demands made by teachers during recent nationwide demonstrations calling for the confirmation of JSS teachers to permanent and pensionable employment.
Kenya’s education sector has faced persistent challenges since the full rollout of junior secondary schools under CBC. Many schools have relied on a mix of permanent teachers, deployed primary staff, and interns to manage increased enrollment.
Current estimates suggest a shortage of tens of thousands of teachers at the JSS level. The addition of 24,000 new positions, combined with efforts to regularize the status of around 20,000 existing interns (bringing the total intern pool to approximately 44,000 at peaks), represents a substantial investment in human capital for education
Timeline for TSC JSS Teacher Absorption and Permanent Jobs
The journey from internship to permanent employment has been a hot topic. Here’s a projected timeline based on recent government statements:
- January 2026: Recruitment and deployment of 24,000 new JSS intern teachers.
- 2026/2027 Financial Year: Progressive confirmation of serving interns (including the previous cohort of ~20,000).
- July 2027: Conversion of the new 24,000 interns to permanent and pensionable terms
