TSC Teacher Promotions 2026/27: Commission Clarifies Interview Charges.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has dismissed as fake a message circulating online that calls for teachers and public basic education institutions to make payments of Ksh1,000 or Ksh500 to facilitate teacher recruitment and promotion interviews.

The Commission cautioned teachers and heads of public basic education institutions against acting on the unauthorized communication, stating that no fees are charged for services provided to teachers, including recruitment and promotion exercises.

“The Commission wishes to clarify that no fees are levied for any services provided to teachers. Recruitment and promotion remain core functions of TSC and are conducted in a transparent and accountable manner,” the Commission stated.

TSC Clarifies Recruitment and Promotion Funding

TSC stated that recruitment and promotion exercises are fully funded by the Commission and that teachers and schools are not required to make financial contributions to facilitate the exercises.

The Commission further stated that County Directors of Education are provided with sufficient resources to facilitate recruitment and promotion exercises.

Heads of public basic education institutions were consequently cautioned against engaging with or entertaining unauthorized financial demands from individuals claiming to represent TSC.

The clarification followed the circulation of a message purporting to have been issued by a teachers’ representative. The message requested schools to contribute money towards the facilitation of teacher promotion and recruitment interviews.

Fake Notice Calls for Ksh1,000 and Ksh500 Contributions

The message, which was reported as circulating online on September 8, 2026, allegedly required schools with junior secondary sections to contribute Ksh1,000, while schools without junior secondary sections were required to contribute Ksh500.

The communication stated:

“Good afternoon colleagues, you are kindly requested to ask our members to contribute for promotional and recruitment interviews support as follows; Schools with Js at ksh1000, and those without Js at Ksh500.”

According to the unauthorized message, the money was to be handed over to zonal chairs by Friday, September 11, 2026, to facilitate the interviews.

TSC did not authorize the payment request and reiterated that recruitment and promotion exercises are funded through the Commission’s established administrative structures.

TSC Promotion Exercises

The clarification was issued on the same day that TSC introduced new guidelines governing teacher promotions for the 2026/27 financial year.

TSC conducts structured and competitive interviews before teachers are promoted to advertised grades and leadership positions. Applications for advertised promotion positions are submitted online through the Teachers Online Services platform.

Candidates are shortlisted according to established criteria, including length of service and merit, before participating in the relevant selection and interview processes.

The Commission stated that recruitment and promotion remain core functions undertaken through its established procedures and reiterated that teachers are not required to pay fees to access these services.

TSC further cautioned heads of public basic education institutions against facilitating unauthorized collections or responding to financial demands made in the name of recruitment or promotion exercises.

The Commission’s clarification therefore maintained that no fees are levied for recruitment, promotion, or other services provided to teachers.
