TSC to Hire 20,000 More Intern Teachers Despite Court Ruling

The government has allocated Sh4.68 billion to TSC to hire 20,000 more teachers on contract, bringing the total number of teachers recruited to 76,000.

The Teachers Service commission (TSC) aims to deploy 18,000 of the recruits in secondary schools and 2,000 in primary schools by 2025 and 2026, respectively.

The manifesto of the coalition government pledged to address the teacher gap, currently at 116,000, by employing 58,000 teachers annually for Sh25 billion per year, if funds permit.

Since 2019, the government has been recruiting teachers on one-year contracts under the “internship” program.

Teachers currently on contract, however, are demanding absorption into permanent and pensionable terms following a court ruling in their favor.

The TSC has obtained orders to keep this judgment in effect until August and is appealing it.

“The education sector will continue to address the ongoing curriculum reforms with a focus on teacher capacity development, e-learning, innovation, technology, entrepreneurship, and talent development,” reads TSC’s report to the Departmental Committee on Education and Research of the National Assembly.

Depending on their workstation and job grade, teachers are also eligible for leave, house allowances, and commuter allowances.

Deployment

Of the new teachers to be hired on contract, the TSC plans to deploy 18,000 in secondary schools and 2,000 in primary schools.

These numbers are planned for 2025 and 2026. The TSC’s report states that the education sector will continue to address the ongoing curriculum reforms with a focus on teacher capacity development, e-learning, innovation, technology, entrepreneurship, and talent development.

Accordingly, the commission will continue to recruit additional teachers for the smooth implementation of the competency-based curriculum.

Specifically, the recruitment will target meeting the needs of both junior and senior schools, with a focus on the new learning areas.
