KJSEA Grading System 2026: Papers, Points and How Placement Works.

The KJSEA grading system converts each learner’s performance in a learning area into one of eight achievement levels worth 1 to 8 points. Each subject carries a maximum of eight points, and with nine learning areas tested the highest possible total is 72. KNEC does not report a percentage or a rank on the slip. Placement into a senior school pathway depends on separate pathway scores printed at the bottom of the results transcript.

This guide explains the points scale, what feeds into the final score, how pathway suitability is worked out, and how each Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) paper is structured. The 2026 candidates sit their written papers from 26 to 30 October, so the dates are covered too.

The eight achievement levels and their points

Performance in every learning area falls into one of four bands, and each band splits in two. Marks of 90 to 100 percent are EE1 (8 points), 75 to 89 percent are EE2 (7 points), 58 to 74 percent are ME1 (6 points) and 41 to 57 percent are ME2 (5 points). AE1 covers 31 to 40 percent (4 points) and AE2 covers 21 to 30 percent (3 points). BE1 covers 11 to 20 percent (2 points) and BE2 covers 10 percent and below (1 point).

The same bands are commonly used in school-based assessments, so a school report card and a KNEC slip use the same language. The percentages behind the levels are not released to candidates, although KNEC’s marks are what the Ministry uses to judge pathway suitability.

A worked example. Suppose a learner gets EE2 in five learning areas (35 points), ME1 in three (18 points) and ME2 in one (5 points). The total is 58 out of 72. This is an illustration of the arithmetic, not a real result.

Why 12 subjects but only 9 learning areas?

KNEC examines 12 subjects, but a learner sits only one option in some of them. Kiswahili and Kenya Sign Language are alternatives, and CRE, IRE and HRE are alternatives. That leaves English, Kiswahili or Kenya Sign Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Agriculture and Nutrition, Social Studies, one Religious Education subject, Creative Arts and Sports, and Pre-Technical Studies.

Can a learner score above 72?

Some websites claim that “bonus weighting” lets totals climb past 72, to figures like 73.33 or 74.99, and that a candidate gets separate “cluster points” in that range for each pathway. We found no KNEC or Ministry statement supporting either claim. The official position is a 72-point maximum, and pathway suitability is reported differently, as explained below. If you see a total above 72 quoted for the 2025 results, treat it as unofficial.

What makes up the final assessment score

The Ministry has said the Grade 9 assessment score has three parts:

ComponentWeight
Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), Grade 620%
School-based assessments20%
KJSEA summative assessment, Grade 960%
KJSEA Grading System 2026: Papers, Points and How Placement Works

The Education CS described the school-based portion as coming from Grades 7 and 8. KNEC’s CEO, in a separate explanation, also mentioned three Grade 9 projects as part of the picture. He said the results drew on KPSEA reports, Grade 7 school-based scores, three Grade 9 projects and the November summative assessment. Neither statement gives the exact arithmetic that turns these components into the reported points.

How pathway suitability and placement work

There are three senior school pathways: STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports Science. KNEC used standard scores (z-scores) in the subjects linked to each pathway to judge a learner’s suitability, and this analysis appears at the bottom of the results slip. For the 2025 cohort, STEM required a composite of 20 percent in the listed subjects, while the other two pathways required 25 percent.

So the number to look at for pathway choice is the pathway composite on the slip. It is not the 72-point total and not a “cluster points” figure.

In the 2025 results, 59.09% of candidates showed potential for STEM, 46.52% for Social Sciences and 48.73% for Arts and Sports. The percentages overlap because one learner can qualify for several pathways. When that happens, the Ministry said other factors, including the learner’s own choices and interests, come into play. Placement was also influenced by how many candidates picked a given school and pathway, performance relative to others in the sub-county, gender and the learner’s choices.

The actual placements differed from the qualification rates. Early in the first placement cycle, 51% of learners were in STEM, 38% in Social Sciences and 11% in Arts and Sports Science. Learners had selected 12 schools in May 2025, before the results were out.

How to read a slip:

  1. Check the level in each learning area (EE1 to BE2), not just the total.
  2. Find the three pathway scores at the bottom and check whether each clears its minimum.
  3. If more than one clears, choose by interest and by the subject combinations the school offers.
  4. Use the official portals only: KNEC’s results portal is kjsea.knec.ac.ke and placement is at placement.education.go.ke.

Approaching Expectations is not a fail. The CS said a grade above 20 percent is enough to move on to pathways needing only basic competence in that area. Mathematics was the weakest area in 2025. Only 32.44% of learners reached Meeting or Exceeding Expectations there.

KJSEA paper structure: 12 subjects, 19 papers

KNEC’s KJSEA regulations set out 12 subjects assessed in 19 papers. Most subjects are written papers, but four learning areas also carry a project or practical component.

The regulations show 100-mark papers for Mathematics, Social Studies and the Religious Education options, and 70-mark theory papers for Integrated Science and Agriculture. The written 905/2 replaces what earlier pre-release descriptions called a laboratory practical.

What the projects involve

KNEC uploads the projects to its CBA portal. Creative Arts and Sports was accessed from 11 May 2026 over three months, and Pre-Technical Studies and Agriculture from 1 July 2026 over one month. Schools had to upload the scores by 30 August 2026. Teachers assess these components against KNEC scoring guidelines, so a learner’s project marks are already with the school before the October papers begin.

Reports based on KNEC’s timetable put the projects in May to July, the rehearsal on 23 October and written papers from 26 to 30 October. Morning papers start at 8.30 a.m. A few sites list a different end date, such as 20 November, so confirm against the official KNEC timetable at knec.ac.ke.

KNEC has not yet announced 2026 results or placement dates. For reference, the 2025 cohort received results on 11 December 2025 and reported to senior school from 12 January 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Does KNEC publish percentage marks for KJSEA?
No. Learners get achievement levels and points, plus the pathway analysis on the slip.

Is the 72-point total the same as a KCPE-style aggregate?
No. It is the sum of eight-level points across nine learning areas. It does not rank learners against each other.

If I qualify for all three pathways, which should I pick?
The Ministry has said other factors, including learner choice, apply in that case. Consider your interests and which subject combinations your preferred schools offer.

Which Religious Education paper do candidates sit?
One of CRE (908), IRE (909) or HRE (910). It counts as a single learning area.
